Waking the Wild Spirit

Most people interested in Tarot know all about RWS (Rider-Waite-Smith) decks and their clones as well as Thoth decks and their clones.  There are many of both out there, and all have their own fans.   I do not read with the Thoth deck or it’s clones.  For some reason it just doesn’t speak to me.    I tend to stick with the RWS type imagery since it’s what I learned with and feel the most comfortable with.  My main RWS deck right now is the Smith-Waite Commemorative deck which is always on my reading table ready for use.

There are other decks though, that run on this same line but have some differences that make them a pleasure to read with.  The first I would like to talk about tonight, is my very favorite deck, Waking the Wild Spirit.   When I first picked up this deck I felt an instant connection.  I felt like I already knew the images I had never seen, that they were a part of my cellular memory somehow.  This deck uses some traditional type images found in other RWS clones, but there are departures from the typical card names as follows:

Fool – Wandering Minstrel
Magician – Cunning Man
High Priestess – Wise woman
Empress – Mother Nature
Emperor – Lord of the Wild
High Priest – Interpreter
Lovers – Soul Mates
Chariot – Hunter
Strength – Natural Force
Hermit – Healer
Wheel – Dance of Life
Justice – Hooded One
Hanged Man – Silence
Death – Rebirth
Temperance – Inner Child
Devil – Fiddler
Tower – Lightning Tree
Star – Source
Moon – Mother Two Moons
Sun – Sky Dancer
Judgement – Transformation
World – Reaper

These changes along with the unique artwork make this a fun and easy deck to read with.  Beginners and seasoned tarot readers should have no problems using this deck intuitively.   Each card also includes a keyword to help with easy assimilation of some of the different meanings in this deck.  Here are a few images from this amazing deck, used with permission by Poppy Palin.

This deck is out of print but can still be obtained directly from the artists website:  www.PoppyPalin.org

This is truly a unique tarot deck filled with whimsical and familiar images.  This deck invites the tarot reader to take time to ponder each image while the images call you into them,  it’s easy to get lost in each one, and finding something new each time you visit.   The bright colors and pleasant illustrations make this deck an enchanting addition to any tarot readers collection.  Not just to be admired, this deck needs to be read, used and loved.  It’s worth going out of your way to buy a copy if you don’t have one already.

Time Prediction with Tarot

Time is such a hard thing to predict with tarot.  There are some rules that I go by, but I like to stress to the Client that there are many factors influencing these predictions.  If you are having a reading from me I will always give a time frame, based on the cards and numerology.  I in no way will say these times are set in stone, but are likely if things continue to progress on the current path.

Method One:

This is the method I used for many years but have now started using method two and have been having a lot of positive results with it.

The four suits of the Tarot can represent specific measures of time:

    • Pentacles = years
    • Wands = months
    • Cups = weeks or days
    • Swords = days or hours.

The Major Trump cards (Kings and Queens) usually indicate an event or situation that is likely to take  place immediately.

The Minor Trump cards (Pages and Knights) usually indicate and event or situation that has no decided time frame, that things are still changing rapidly and a time frame will be better sought at another time.

Method Two:

Astrological

I would again like to stress, that of all things Tarot, time prediction is the most likely to not be accurate, only because there are so many factors that can contribute to time frames.   As a Querent, you need to understand that Tarot is giving you insight on a situation and will likely result in changes in behavior concerning the outcome -this can be a positive or negative so plan your actions carefully.

How often?

I am in the business of reading tarot for more than one reason.  First is to help people, and second is to be able to supplement my family income.  I love helping my clients and I enjoy hearing from them regularly.  I enjoy hearing how my reading has helped them understand things better in their lives, or helped them see things more clearly.  I often get e-mails or calls from clients just telling me how they are doing and it really does my heart good to hear these things.

When I read online, I offer something to every client I read for, a clarification reading.  I ask they send me an e-mail in about a week so I can clarify the reading, pull a few card to see if there are changes in the situation or circumstance.  I do this on my dime, sending free minutes when they are ready and often times just doing it through e-mail at their request.  I feel this is good for both the client and myself.

A week  is a good amount of time.  It gives the cards time to change.  After a week, people have had things going on in their lives that may change the way they feel about subject of the reading.  Often times, when looking for a time frame or a yes or no type answer to come into view enough to actually see the answer.  A week is a good amount of time.

As much as I enjoy the money reading brings in however, I don’t enjoy taking money from my clients who want the same reading repeatedly, often in the same day.  People and situations do not usually change in a matter of minutes or even hours.   I often try to explain this to the client who is so in need of the answer they seek that they don’t mind paying over and over.  I have learned there is a time to just say no.  It’s not good for the client or me to do this.

One of the things I am proud of as a reader is that I will tell my clients what I see, the truth sometimes hurts but, in the long run it’s what needs to be heard.  Telling the same truth over and over though, is not good for either of us.  It puts a lot of stress on me as a reader to try and pull anything different out of these types of readings.  And it is stressful for the client that is often distraught and praying for a different outcome.   There are also times where it seems even the cards are saying no, by giving a reading so garbled they are like a child throwing a fit after being asked to do the same thing repeatedly until they just can’t deal with it anymore.

I think this post is for everyone.  For readers I am saying, don’t be afraid to say no.  Explain to the client that for their own sanity they must focus on something else for a short time and allow things to change.  For the client, it does neither of us a benefit to spend your hard earned money to hear the same answer over and over.  A week in most cases will do the trick, and in especially volatile situations a few days may be enough.  I will usually tell the client which will be best at the end of our call or in a follow up e-mail.

I am here to help you, and sometimes the best way I can help you is to just say that it’s too soon.

tarot, intuition and psychic abilities – tying it together

Many tarot readers are just that, tarot readers.  They know the meanings of the cards, and read the cards as per those meanings.  There are many books out there on tarot that teach not just the upright meanings, but reversals and combination’s as well.  These books are wonderful and a perfect way to learn about tarot and how to read.   I myself, have quite a tarot library and refer to it often, but there’s more.

After learning the “standard” accepted meanings some readers move on the intuitive reading.  This is where you read the cards by what you see, often going against the “standard” meanings.  As I learned to read intuitively I learned to read tarot as a story, to see the entire picture.  I also learned that a standard spread was not necessary for all readings, that knowing the question was enough to let the cards tell the story they needed to tell.  When I purchase a new deck I usually buy two, first I will trim the deck so that card names and keywords are gone and all I see is the card itself.  Doing this really allows me to learn the cards the way I see them, it allows me not to feel constrained by tradition and open up to the possibilities that is tarot.

The next step beyond intuitive readings is to open yourself and allow a connection between you, the client and the cards.  Everyone has psychic abilities, it really is a matter of opening yourself up to it, practicing and trusting your instinct.  By learning intuitive reading  you are starting to allow yourself to open up to thoughts and ideas that come to you, this is what I consider the start of  understanding your psychic ability.  Using your psychic ability you may find that the same card never means the same thing from reading to reading.  The more a reader opens themselves up to their psychic nature, the better they become at it.

Some of us are born with psychic abilities.  I have always been able to connect with people.  Firstly, on an empathetic level, I have always been able to feel others pain and happiness.  Attending funerals as a child was just too hard for me since the sadness and mourning that people were going through was just overwhelming to me.  As I got older not only could I pick up on other peoples feelings, but I would know if someone close to me was feeling.  I would often call people at the moment they were going to call me.  Deja-Vu was a common occurrence  in my life.   It was these abilities that drew me back to tarot after taking time away from the cards to raise my family.  Know that I am older my psychic abilities are so much stronger and I can often connect with my clients in a profound way.  All tarot readers have the ability to hone these abilities.  As long as you believe and work at it, you too can use your psychic abilities to take your reading to the next level.

When the cards cause pain

There are many schools of thoughts regarding bad, dark, or negative news when doing a tarot reading.  Some people feel that the cards are there to find a positive path, that no reading should be negative and only the good should be read.  I feel differently.

I do readings to help people see the way things are at any given moment.  If you ask about a persons feelings or intentions, the answer I will give will be how I see that persons intentions or feelings at that given moment.  Feelings and intentions can and do often change, which is what makes life so hard to predict.

Many times, when a person is asking the question, they have their own doubts about a person and these type of readings are very rarely wishy-washy, they are usually an entire spread pointing to the same result.  When I get cards like this it is imperative that I share the truth with the client.  I believe that in giving false hope, I would cause more pain to the client in the future, than in giving them the truth I see right now.  Why would a reader like to prolong a bad situation for a client?  This is not the kind of person I am in life.  I believe that there is light and darkness in every situation, when they blur into gray, I will tell you that I see it as gray, that things are not decided, that the person is conflicted, I will not lean towards the light to make the client feel better.

If you are looking for an all happy reading, PLEASE, find a reader that tends to find the light and happiness in everything they see.  There are many of them out there and I am not saying they are wrong, but that is not how I read.  If you want the truth, be it light, dark or gray – please let me know.  If I see pain for you or even cause you pain with the reading, trust that when the call is over, I will be crying for you or feeling the pain you are feeling.  I don’t like giving this kind of news, but I know that it is better to hear it now than later.

If you do get a dark or gray reading from me, I will always offer free time for future clarification.  I will always ask for a weeks time to pass so that I can see things more clearly.  I will see if intentions or feelings change and am happy to either verify what I saw in the first reading or to happily notify you of positive changes in the situation.

Questions and Spreads

If you are new to tarot or seeking advice for the first time you may want to know a little bit about spreads and questions.

Here are some guidelines for forming questions for the tarot that I have found work the best for me and my reading.

The first thing you should know is that tarot is not good at answering yes/no or where/when type questions.  Tarot gives answers in what I call “story” form.   The cards can tell you what surrounds your situation and how you can influence your decisions,  the future can always change based on your actions and the others involved in your situation.

Forming a good question will give you a good reading.  Some good examples are:

How will (situation) turn out?

What do I need to understand about (situation)?

How should I proceed with (situation)?

What is the likely outcome if I chose (situation)?

These are all great types of questions for the tarot, the reason being that tarot is there to give you advise and a picture of the situation how it looks now, or how it can change.

There are a plethora of spreads a reader can use, some like to dabble in them all some like to stick with just a few.  I prefer either five or ten card spreads.  My favorite being the five.  A spread is the manner in which the cards are laid out to find the answer to your question.  In most spreads, each position is a part of the answer.  My favorite spread for example reads from the Querant’s (person asking the question) left to right with the card positions as follows:

1.  You – This card signifies you in the reading.

2.  Obstacles – This card will tell you what is standing in your way at this time.

3.  Focus – This card will advise you what you need to focus on to achieve your goal pertaining to the question.

4.  Let Go Of – As in life we often must let go of something, be it something physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental, to achieve our goals, this  card will tell you what that thing may be.

5.  Outcome/Advice – This card will give you the advice or the answer pertaining to the outcome of the question you are asking, taking into consideration the card that come before it.  This advice card works hand in hand with the other cards, the advice/outcome card never stands alone and looking deeply only on this card will not help you achieve your goals.

Here is an BRIEF example, this is not a full reading, it only shows the main points, you will receive much more in a full reading.

Question:  What will happen if I take this new job?

Spread:

1 – You – Queen of Wands

The Queen of wands is affable, cordial and intelligent, albeit a little aggressive at times.   She is also easily motivated, outgoing and enthusiastic about her endeavors.   She comes from the element of fire which means she has a fiery temperament which will need to be kept in check.  She has all the qualities needed to succeed so now is a good time to move forward in a new business venture.

Brief:  You’re ready to take on the new job – it’s time to go for it.

2- Obstacles – The Sun(R)*

The Sun card is all about success and attainment, independence and personal freedom, but this time, the Sun is reversed.  This means that in your mind some clouds have covered the face of the sun and this is something that has happened before.   In the Obstacle position this card advised you to see through the clouds and have faith in yourself.  Self-doubt is not new to you and it’s something that needs to be overcome to have success, you must have faith in yourself and once you do, the clouds will burn off and the sun will shine.

Brief:  Don’t talk yourself out of it – you are ready!

3 – Focus – Strength

The Strength card is not about a physical strength but more of a mental or spiritual type of strength.  The card shows a woman overcoming a lion, with her gentle disposition and kindness.  The this position it shows you are ready to move on and must use your mind and spirit to overcome future obstacles relating to this job, but most of all, it shows that you have the tools you need to succeed.

Brief:  It’s time to focus on the skills you know you have – use them well.

4 – Let go of – Page of Wands (R)

The Page of Wands upright usually concerns communications, but being in this position reversed it signifies the need to let go of your need to be image conscious, and your tendency to be superficial.

Brief:  Look deeply in yourself, you need to let the things go that don’t matter and focus on who you are because that’s what people need to see.

5 – Advice/Outcome – Magician

The Magician indicates energy, focus and manifestation.  In this position it shows you have the capabilities, skills and knowledge  to succeed in this job if you apply yourself and give it your best.   Success will not come to you by sitting back and letting things happen, if you use the tools you have available to you, this will be a very successful venture.

Brief:  This is a great step for you to take at this time.  It will lead you to where you are wanting to be.

note:  the (R) means the card is reversed or upside down

Just remember that asking the right questions will give you the best reading possible.  Don’t ask the cards what they can’t answer, and most of all, don’t expect the cards to give you the answer you want, the cards tell the truth as it is in the moment, it’s up to you to listen and plan your actions accordingly.

Tarot bags

I like to keep each of my tarot decks in their own bag.  I prefer leather but cotton or silk will do when I don’t have enough leather pouches to keep my decks warm and safe.  I then store my leather pouches in old wooden cigar boxes which all have a satchel of sea salt.  The sea salt is used to cleanse any negative energy the cards may have picked up from the prior reading.   Salt has been used by many different cultures for cleansing negativity for thousands of years.  When the deck is removed from the bag it is then smudged with sage and sweet-grass.  Smudging has also been used for cleansing by Native Americans and other cultures for many generations.  The Sage is used to cleanse negative energy and the sweet-grass is used to invite positive energy in the cards.  Why am I telling you this?  So you know that when I do a reading, the cards are charged and cleansed and ready for you, and they won’t be holding any energies from the last Querant I read for.

Tarot Bags by My Grandmothers Hands

I’ve recently bought some new bags – these first ones are wraps and fit all my normal size decks, from my trimmed RWS deck all the way up to the tall Deviant Moon deck.  I love these wraps.  They are so soft and supple and having one in every color allows me to easily know which deck is which.  I also love that they have a crystal incorporated in the design for a little extra cleansing.  She makes them with either smooth leather or suede.  I love the smooth leather, it’s like BUTTER – I could just sit and pet the leather all day.

If you are interested in one of these you can find her Esty store here:  My Grandmothers Hands.

Custom Bag by Mi-Shell

I also like unique bags and tend to seek out custom made bags that fit my personality, which if you know me falls on the eclectic side. ;) .

I am a member of the Aeclectic Tarot Forum and there are numerous bag makers on there and they all make lovely bags and there is a great variety of styles and sizes.  I just had a custom bag made for me for my birthday, which is this month.  Today I received a picture of it and can’t wait to decide which deck will go in it!  You can view Mi-Shell’s website here:  Bearpaw Jewelry.  Just drop her a line, she’s easy to work with and will make your bag to your specifications which is especially good if you want to fit a bag to a specific deck.

If you have a favorite bag maker, let me know and I will happily put up your review here.  Like purses, a girl can never have too many tarot bags – and if you have more bags that decks it’s a good reason to buy a new deck.  Either way, as long as you use girl math (if you save money on one thing it gives you more for another) then you can’t go wrong.

Learning the Major Arcana

If you are new to reading tarot, you are probably wondering if you will ever memorize the cards order, never mind all their meanings.  This first think I did when learning tarot was to make up stories.  Simple, easy to remember ones that helped me recall information.   Here is the one I used for learning the order of the Major Arcana.  You can use it if you like, or make up your own story, the point is to make it memorable so even if you forget the next card, the story is so simple it will guide you to it.

John and Mary

This is the story of the Mary and John, the ill fated FOOLs.
Mary’s parents – The MAGICIAN and the HIGH PRIESTESS
met John’s parents the EMPRESS and the EMPEROR
for their meeting with the HEIROPHANT.
You see, the young LOVERS
stole a CHARIOT
for a quick trip to Las Vegas to find a JUSTICE of the peace.
Afterward, they when to the HERMIT
casino to spin the WHEEL OF FORTUNE.
Using all her STRENGTH
Mary spun THE WHEEL, but fell and died.
John, without Mary, took his life as the HANGED MAN.
Once they both met DEATH
because of their lack of TEMPERANCE
in life, the DEVIL
shows up. Afraid, the two run up the TOWER
to get away – to the STARS
and the MOON
and the SUN
so they can have their final JUDGMENT
for their time they spent in THE WORLD.

It worked because if they could remember the first few cards the rest of the story just seems to fall into place.  The next story I share with you will be the keyword story.

Shadowscapes – a very intuitive deck

Special Edition Shadowscapes Deck - image from Shadowscapes website.

I’ve always been an intuitive reader, but often times I had to force it.  It would take some effort to pull the meaning out of the cards rather than use the keywords and descriptions I know to be their suggested meanings.

Scanning the spread with the Shadowscapes deck is really improving  my ability to intuitively read.  The stories that my readings become seem to just jump out of this deck and it definitely has a plethora of stories to tell.  The stories tend to jump out at me in a way other decks attempted to do.  I did a reading for a blog Querent, it was an unusual reading for me, not the type I normally will do but I really wanted to test the cards.  I had no preconceived ideas about the Querent and the question was so vague I was worried I wouldn’t find a satisfactory answer.  Was I ever wrong.  Things just started flowing out of the spread.  I did the spread and slid the cards behind a book so as not to see the  card names since I haven’t memorized each image yet it was a great way to test the deck.    I felt as if I knew their story, not just the cards but the people who I was reading about.  I had very clear images of the people I was reading for, I felt their story – it flowed out of me as naturally as telling my own.

I sent the reading to the Querent and was happy that she immediately responded positively to the reading.  She commented that it was very intuitive since the reading really was about the entire picture – which she gave me no clues of.

I am really enjoying this deck and at this point, it will be my main reading deck for upright readings along with the MerryDay deck.  Revelations and Transparent are still my main decks for reversal readings with other decks like the Smith-WaiteNative American,   Hanson-RobertsDame Fortune’s Wheel,  or even the Tarot of New Vision which is a look at the RWS classic from a different point of view,  for the Querent to choose from if they so desire.  For some reason, each deck wants to be used in it’s own way, and some are better for one type of reading and other  something different.  Interestingly enough, the Querent usually picks the deck that will work best for their type of question.

I have other decks available but I really like to use the above decks at the moment, it seems we are a family of sorts, me the Mother and the decks my children.  They each like their time with me and I know them well, sometimes better than they know themselves.

A brief look at Tarot

Tarot is a set of 78 cards, divided in two sets: the major arcana and the minor arcana. The major arcana contains 22 cards.  The minor arcana is based on the traditional playing card deck of 52 cards. In it are the four suits; pentacles (earth), cups (water), swords (air), and wands (fire). Each suit has ten numbered cards, ace to ten, plus the four court cards. These are page, knight, king and queen. Some, but not all tarot decks have picture images on each of the numbered cards.

The very first cards we know of date from the late Middle Ages and appeared in Italy. They first developed into a set of cards depicting virtues, like Strength and Temperance. They then developed into more elaborate sets of different number of cards and different order of the cards. They were primarily used by the aristocracy as the method of production for cards at that time was not exactly cheap. When the Tarot entered France it took the shape of a uniform deck, that is, it had 78 cards and the order of the cards in the major arcana remained the same. Today we are still using the same order.

The Tarot cards are archetypes, that is they represent a psychological quality that we all share. They are, in a certain sense, a spiritual heritage of mankind. The archetypes always remain the same, but how they manifest and form depends on your culture, your environment, and even of your own psychological make-up. Take the Death card, for example. Death is an archetype we all share. It is a key ingredient of life. But death means has a different meaning to spiritual Indian yogi than to a Western materialist. For some people death is transformation to a higher state of being, while for others it is the unwanted extinction of life.

The cards may have an underlying, symbolic meaning, but you have to learn how to allow yourself to discover what they mean for you. At the same time, a card can bring up slightly different interpretations in different readings. A reading is a highly personalized representation of a certain situation for a certain person at a certain time. Intuition and inspiration will give you the appropriate explanation for the cards at that time, for that person in those circumstances.

Tarot cards are a means of revealing patterns of energy in the past or the present. It allows us to clarify situations. We all have the answers within us, but they are not always conscious. Tarot cards, like any other means of divination, can be used to tap into the unconscious, where all the answers lie, and bring it out into the conscious. Then you can make decisions on your own what to do next.
